The videos are an adjunct instructional tool, and are not meant to replace a qualified teacher who has to observe and correct youur practice. You can learn from my videos only if you have some Wing Chun training, and someone with whom to practice.

As for how long it takes to become proficient in the art of Wing Chun to defend oneself, that is dependent on a number of factors:

how qualified is your instructor
how intensively do you train
how many hours a the day and days of the week do you train

Some of my regular students who have trained for little more than a year are able to fight fairly well. Others take two to three years to get to the same level.

The colour of the belt doesn't indicate much in actuality. There may be a world of difference between a 20-year-old, 6'2", 180 lb. brown belt and a 16-year-old, 5'6", 120 lb. black belt. A person's ability cannot always be measured by the colour of their belt. It all depends on the individual. I only use my belt to hold up my pants, not as an indication of my ability.
